Tuberculosis (TB) Testing
Tuberculosis is an illness in which TB bacteria multiply and attack different parts of the body. The symptoms of TB disease include weakness, weight loss, fever, loss of appetite, chills, and sweating at night. Other symptoms of TB disease depend on where in the body the bacteria are growing. If TB disease is in the lungs (pulmonary TB), the symptoms may include a bad cough, pain in the chest, and coughing up blood.
A tuberculin test, or PPD skin test, is used to detect tuberculosis infection. A tiny amount of fluid is injected under the skin of the forearm and a visible reaction will be present within 3 days if infection is present. This service requires a follow-up visit 2-3 days after administration of the test. This test is required of most health care workers and is recommended for anyone possibly exposed to it.
